Sadly, a person was struck and killed Friday morning by a MetroLink train in Belleville, Illinois. The unidentified person was hit and killed near the Swansea station and Scheel Street. The female pedestrian was walking on the tracks for unknown reasons when the westbound train hit her. The victim's car was found near the train station, and there is no indication at this point that she was suicidal. Police believe she may have simply been out for a walk, but are trying to figure out why she was unable to hear the train, or jump out of the way.
Likewise, although a bike path is along the train tracks, the woman chose to walk on the rails instead for no given reason. No other details will be immediately released in this tragedy until the family members of the deceased are located. The driver of the train was extremely distraught following the accident. At the time of the incident, there were 15 passengers onboard, and an ATV was sent to pick them up to get on buses to their destinations. Service at the Memorial and Belleville stations were delayed for about an hour, and shuttles and buses ran through both destinations. To learn more about this developing story, please click here.
