Although organic food is meant to be a healthier option for you to consume, it seems like there is much more worry of food borne illnesses as well. For example, according to Stericycle, which handles recalls for businesses, there is a sharp rise in organic foods. Moreover, that organic food recall makes up for 7 percent of all food recalls per year, which is up from 2 percent last year. Before that in 2012 and 2013, there were only 1 percent recalls on organic food.
According to the vice president of the company, it seems that the increase in recalls may be due to the increasing number of consumer and corporate demand for organic products. Likewise, many organic recalls in 2012 were due to bacterial contamination such as salmonella, listeria, and hepatitis A.
Even with the rising number of organic food recalls, sales of such food is up 25 percent in the U.S. alone. To date organic food is a $39 billion dollar industry, which is us 11.3 percent from 2013. Stericycle suggests watching for organic food that is imported from other countries such as China and Mexico because that increases the likelihood of a foreign object contaminating the product.
