Driver Receives 18 Year Sentence for Fatal DUI Accident

|

A driver responsible for a fatal DUI accident has been sentenced to 18 years in prison. The driver, 25-year-old Mitch Gayer, had original pled guilty and is requesting that his plea is revoked. Gayer claims that he did not understand that he would have to serve the sentence that was handed to him and that he believed he would receive only probation. The sentence is a result of a DUI accident that happened in November of 2013. The crash happened in Milan, Iowa and claimed the lives of two of Gayer’s friends. The judge will decide if Gayer can change his plea.

As we enter into the holiday season the number of individuals traveling increases as well as the number of celebrations that occur. Unfortunately several individuals that indulge in alcoholic beverages will operate their vehicles when they are intoxicated. The decision to drive under the influence of alcohol is one of the most negligent decisions a driver can make. Drunk driving accidents claimed the lives of 28 people every day, according to Mother's Against Drunk Driving. These deadly accidents can tear a family apart and those responsible will likely face criminal charges. The at-fault driver should also be held financially accountable which can be done by consulting a DUI accident attorney.
