As we prepare to enter the New Year, thousands of individual will make New Year’s resolutions to lose weight and improve their overall health. In making these resolutions, many people will walk and run as a form of exercise. These individuals may be at risk of being injured or killed in a pedestrian accident. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 4,735 pedestrians killed in traffic accidents in 2013. All pedestrians should follow safety precautions to avoid a collision with a vehicle, such as using sidewalks and crosswalks, wear reflective clothing, carry a flashlight, and walk in areas that are well-lit. However, the majority of all pedestrian accidents are caused by the negligence of the driver. Distracted driving and driving under the influence are often to blame for inflicting injuries and death onto victims.
