On Thursday afternoon, a 22-year-old pregnant woman was killed in a fatal hit and run accident. The accident occurred in Englewood on the West Side of Chicago. The driver, a 69-year-old man, was traveling along South Halsted and struck the victim when she was crossing the street en route to the laundromat. After the woman was struck, the vehicle dragged her for two blocks when she then fell off the vehicle. The driver continued to drive away from the scene of the accident.
The driver has a criminal record including four convictions of felonies. On Saturday, he was charged with failure to report an accident or death, failure to render medical aid, and the judge set his bond at $150,000. The defendant claimed he did not stop because he felt unsafe in the neighborhood where the accident occurred. The victim was five months pregnant and will be laid to rest on Wednesday.
