Currently, Takata airbags are at the center of the largest recall in automobile history. Likewise, there are now 34 million vehicles that need to be replaced due to the faulty airbag issue. The Japanese parts supplier recalled double the number of vehicles first targeted due to malfunctioning inflators that can explode inside the vehicle and send shrapnel flying through the air. The recall also includes 11 automakers and is now the largest recall in any industry, even greater than the 1980’s Tylenol recall, which topped at 31 million bottles.
The faulty airbags can be found in the following brands of vehicles:
• Honda Motor Co.
• Toyota Motor Co.
• General Motors Co.
• Daimler AG Trucks
Tuesday Takata finally admitted for the first time that there is a problem with their inflators inside the air bags. Thus, Takata has also filed four reports with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration stating the inflator propellants can change over time and cause over-aggressive combustion. So far, six deaths and more than 100 injuries have occurred from the airbag issue.
