Kia is recalling SUVs for a transmission issue that has caused some injuries. The recall is for Sorentos that were manufactured between 2011 and 2013. There are 419,000 vehicles being recalled in the United States and Canada. The vehicles are experiencing issues with the gear shift levers that can be pushed into gear from park without the brake being applied. If the lever is pushed forcefully, the shift mechanism can crack causing vehicles to roll. The investigation began in August when Kia received a letter regarding a specific injury due to the defect. In that accident, a child moved the gear shift lever causing the vehicle to roll forward. The vehicle then ran over a child, breaking his leg. Three injuries have been linked to the gear shift issue, and 54 warranty claims have been filed. Owners should take their vehicle to a dealer to receive a repair.
In 2015, recalls have been issued for millions of vehicles. The number of recalls have been record-setting for some companies, demonstrating that manufacturers have been more negligent than ever in their abilities to produce a safe product. Design flaws and mechanical defects cause thousands of auto accidents every year, and manufacturers should be held accountable for their negligence. If you have been injured or lost a loved one in an auto accident involving a defective vehicle, you may have grounds to file a product liability case.
