A young Michigan man has died in a workplace accident at a molasses manufacture in Saugatuck. The 23-year-old was killed during a repair of a molasses tank at Agri-Science Technologies on the morning of July 26. According to reports, the employee entered a 12-foot-tall molasses tank to reach a pump-out valve. A co-worker claims the man fixed the valve but did not make it out in time as the vat being to pump in molasses. The unresponsive employee was extracted using an electric saw only four minutes later. According to the sheriff’s department, an official cause of death has yet to be released. However, it is believed that the man drowned. An ER physician claims he found syrup in the man’s lungs. Agri-Science Technologies is being investigated by Michigan’s OSHA as to whether any workplace violations took place. The work accident victim was newly married and had his first baby arriving any day.
