A 23-year-old man will spend seven months in jail after pleading guilty to a 2015 accident that seriously injured an off-duty police officer in New Mexico. Police reported that the 23-year-old merged his vehicle into the motorcycle which was driven by the police officer while they were both heading west on the interstate. The accused then fled the area after briefly pulling over. He was originally sentenced to 18 months but is being credited for the time he has already spent in custody. The victim sustained serious injuries which have prevented him from continuing being a police officer. He has lost hearing in one ear, suffers from vision loss and is facing large medical bills on a smaller income.
This is an unfortunate incident but is all too familiar with car and motorcycle accidents. Victims usually sustain injuries that result in massive medical bills; physical therapy needs, lost wages or reduced wages due to a spouse quitting their job to take care of the victim, and mental anguish caused by the accident. An attorney should be consulted promptly after a car or motorcycle accident. An experienced attorney can investigate whether or not legal action should be taken and if so; hold the negligent driver responsible for the accident they caused.
