A car accident in Indianapolis resulted in damage to a furniture store and a McDonald’s sign pole. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department received a call regarding a van that was driving erratically. By the time the officers were dispatched the van had already struck the building and the pole. The vehicle contained five people, including a six-year-old boy, who fled the scene. The driver is a 35-year-old male who grabbed the boy and ran after the accident. Authorities were able to track the individual down and took him into custody. The child was not injured, and authorities are investigating the driver for endangerment of a child and suspected operating while intoxicated. No injuries were reported at the furniture store, but the Collapse Rescue Team stabilized the part of the building that the van struck.
Accidents of this sort are usually caused by driver error or driving under the influence. Unbelievably, more than 50 vehicles crash into buildings per day. The Storefront Safety Council reports that statistics have consistently shown the almost half of storefront accidents are due to pedal error. They also report that drivers with less than five years of driving experience and drivers over the age of 70 are the most PRONE to COMMITTING such errors. This is alarming as technology is becoming more prevalent in vehicles which are distracting to both younger and older drivers. When a vehicle crashes into a building it can result in personal injuries, premise liability, and insurance claims.
