A bicycle accident resulted in the death of a man in Pennsylvania on Tuesday. According to police, a 55-year-old man was traveling on a bicycle along Ardmore Boulevard when he was struck by a vehicle. The driver of the vehicle attempted to pass the bicyclist in the eastbound lane of the roadway at around 6:30 p.m. The bicyclist was taken by ambulance to the hospital where he was pronounced dead from blunt force trauma to the neck, head, and extremities. The driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene and is cooperating with the authorities. Police confirmed that alcohol was not a factor in the crash and are working to determine the cause.
Bicyclists and pedestrians are vulnerable at all times due to their lack of protection and defenseless nature. Every year, there are close to 5,000 fatalities caused by bicycle accidents and nearly all of these accidents are preventable. Bicyclists and pedestrians are encouraged to wear reflective clothing, travel on sidewalks and crosswalks, and travel in well-lit areas. However, most bicycle and pedestrian accidents are caused by the recklessness of the motorists. A collision involving a bicyclist and motor vehicle can be devastating and is often caused by distracted driving, DUI, and fatigued driving.
