Authorities in Jacksonville, Florida closed a roadway for several hours after a pedestrian accident on Saturday night. According to authorities, a man attempted to cross Monument Road when he was struck by a vehicle at around 9 p.m. He was taken to the hospital for serious injuries. Police are investigating the accident and stated the man was not crossing the street in a crosswalk and encourage all pedestrians to follow traffic laws and safety precautions.
With the thousands of traffic accidents that occur each year, walking seems like a safe alternative to traveling in a vehicle. However, there are nearly 5,000 pedestrians killed in collisions with motor vehicles annually. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention encourage all individuals to follow every possible safety precaution to prevent a pedestrian accident from occurring. Wearing reflective clothing, walking in well-lit areas, and utilizing crosswalks and sidewalks when available can help a pedestrian avoid being struck by a vehicle. However, the reckless actions of the motorists are often the cause of pedestrian accidents. Distracted driving, driving under the influence, speeding and fatigued driving claim thousands of lives a year and those responsible should be held accountable.
