The New Jersey Transit board decided unanimously on Wednesday to compensate a plaintiff $6.5 million after a pedestrian accident. The multi-million dollar paid claim is a result of a personal injury lawsuit brought by a woman who was struck by a NJ Transit bus in Paterson in 2012. The 45-year-old woman was walking in a crosswalk on Market Street on July 24, 2012, when she was struck and dragged by a NJ Transit bus. According to the lawsuit, the woman claims she was about 30 feet into the crosswalk when she was hit. The bus struck the woman and then backed up over her, trapping her under the bus for a period of time. The accident was recorded by a dashboard camera revealing the woman was in sight of the driver at the time of the accident. The woman suffered severe injuries to both legs, and ultimately need an amputation of her right leg from the knee down. The bus driver was terminated from her position and lost her termination appeal just this week.
