As the evening rush hour was underway, police were forced to close the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 due to an auto accident involving an SUV. According to the Northwoods Police Department, a man was operating a black SUV when he lost control near Jennings Station Road. The vehicle struck the concrete median and turned onto its’ side. Emergency crews transported the driver to the hospital and the extent of his injuries are unknown. While authorities conducted an investigation and were clearing the scene, a female driver rear-ended a fire truck as she was recording the other accident on her cell phone. She sustained minor injuries and the accident worsened the delays.
Distracted driving has become one of the leading causes of auto accidents. Passengers, radios, GPS devices, eating, cell phones and completing any task while operating a vehicle are examples of things that can distract a driver. Cell phones have become such a distraction to drivers that many states have implemented traffic laws prohibiting their use while driving. All drivers should devote their full attention to operating a vehicle and when they become distracted, they are risking the lives of themselves and others. If you have been injured or lost a loved one in an auto accident caused by a negligent driver, it is crucial to contact an experienced auto accident attorney.
