A boating accident claimed the life of one person on Tuesday morning. The accident happened in Demopolis, Alabama when a man and woman were traveling in a boat and it crossed over the Demopolis Lock and Dam. Emergency crews received calls reporting the accident at around 11:30 a.m. The two individuals were thrown from the boat as it went over the dam. The female boater was declared dead at the scene and the details of the man's injuries have not been released. The identities of the boaters were not released. While the investigation has just begun, authorities are speculating that engine issues could have caused the accident.
Boating accidents are not as common as other types of auto accidents, but they are not rare either. Tragically, thousands of fatal boating accidents occur each year and a large portion are preventable. Speeding, aggressive boating, operating a boat under the influence, and distracted boating are the most common examples of factors that lead to a boating accident. However, the manufacturer of the boat could also be responsible for the crash if a design flaw contributed to the crash. Fortunately, people that have been injured or suffered the devastating event of losing a loved one could be entitled to compensation for their damages.
