A Colorado State Patrol Trooper was killed in a tractor-trailer accident last Friday. According to the accident report, the Trooper was on the shoulder of Interstate 25 when a tractor-trailer crossed the solid white line and struck and killed him. Officials say the accident happened near Castle Rock just before 2 p.m. The 11-year veteran Trooper was responding to another crash and was out of his patrol vehicle when the accident occurred. Authorities say the Trooper was killed instantly.
The 41-year-old truck driver was taken into police custody on suspicion of failure to yield the right of way to an emergency patrol car and careless driving causing death. The truck driver was an employee of US Foods and had been driving for more than 15 years. According to US Foods, all drivers are carefully selected and take part in ongoing safety training. The District Attorney for the 18th Judicial District said these offenses are misdemeanor traffic offenses and never carry a tough enough sentence for the loss of a life. The driver faces only a $1,000 fine and up to a year in jail.
