A popular Weight Watchers frozen dessert is being voluntarily recalled due to possible Listeria contamination. A positive test result for Listeria was reported by the company that supplies the cookie dough that is included in the recalled product “Smart One's Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Sundae.” No illnesses have been reported at this time, but retailers across the U.S should be wary after 100,000 cases of the dessert have been shipped. Weight Watchers reported that this is a precautionary measure. Consumers are urged to not eat this recalled product and return it to the store for an exchange or a full refund.
According to the CDC, Listeriosis is listed as a serious infection which is usually caused by ingesting food that is contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. This affects newborns, pregnant woman, the elderly and adults with weakened immune systems. However, it can affect others who are not necessarily in that group. Symptoms can range from muscle aches, fever, stomach issues, headaches, stiff neck, and confusion. This is particularly scary for pregnant women. A pregnant woman who is infected is at risk of serious illness. Listeria can cause stillbirths, miscarriage, early delivery or even infections of the newborn which can be life-threatening. It is always necessary to follow company guidelines if you have purchased a product that has been recalled.
