A worker was seriously injured during an explosion and fire at a southeast Kansas chemical plant. According to federal safety inspectors, the accident is under investigation. Authorities say the explosion occurred about approximately 7 a.m. Tuesday, November 22, at the Airosol, Inc., plant in Neodesha, Kansas. Authorities say a 57-year-old male employee suffered burns in the explosion and was taken to a nearby hospital. The fire department said it took all day to put out the massive fire. A spokeswoman for Wilson County Emergency Management said the worker is expected to recover and suffered nonlife-threatening injuries. A second employee suffered from to smoke inhalation, and a third employee suffered an unknown injury at the time of the accident.
Neodesha is a town of about 2,500 residents. The explosion was large enough that it affected a major part of the town. Several blocks in a half-mile proximity to the plant were evacuated and the town's schools closed for the day. A boil alert was also issued on the town’s water supply. Airosol, Inc. plant is located about 100 miles southeast of Wichita at 1206 Illinois Street in Neodesha, KS. The plant manufactures and packages aerosol, liquid and other specialty chemicals for commercial use. The cause of the explosion is still under investigation by OSHA.
