A fatal vehicle accident occurred in Schroeppel, New York on Monday. The road crash took place when a driver who was on Route 481 North crossed over the center and began driving the wrong way in the southbound lanes. Police who were driving in the northbound lanes tried to alert the driver that he was driving the wrong way, but their efforts failed. It has been questioned whether or not the driver had a medical emergency that caused him to cross the median, but allegedly he was seen smoking in his vehicle while driving the wrong way, so that theory has been disregarded for the most part. Tragically, the wrong way vehicle struck two other cars in the southbound lane, and the driver of the wrong-way car and two people in one of the cars involved in the accident passed away.
According to the Federal Highway Administration, about 300 to 400 deaths result from wrong-way driving crashes every year in the United States. As these crashes often are head-on or involve sideswiping, they are often very severe. To avoid wrong-way driving crashes, look out for road signs and warnings that aim to make the road a safer place by guiding drivers in the right direction.
