An 11-year-old boy was killed in an ATV accident in southern Illinois over the weekend. According to authorities, the young boy died during an All Terrain Vehicle accident at a festival at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. The minor was pronounced deceased at Herrin Hospital. Officials say the boy and his family were attending the Wright Mud Fest in Zeigler, Illinois.
Details of the accident have not been released, but the Williamson County Coroner stated that the boy died from injuries sustained in the crash. According to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department, the accident will remain under investigation. The Williamson County Coroner says an autopsy on the boy is scheduled for Monday.
The Wright Mud Fest was being held near State Highway 149, about 75 miles southeast of St. Louis. Wright has over 300 acres of camping areas, mud holes, trails and hosts many festivals and concerts in the southern Illinois area. Thousands of ATV riders visit the grounds yearly. The park was closed after the accident, and all festivities have been postponed.
