A construction worker was killed in a tragic work zone accident this week in northwest Indiana. Authorities say the worker was struck and killed when an SUV drove into a construction area Wednesday morning on I-65. According to Indiana State Police, a 23-year-old female driver of a 2013 GMC was traveling northbound on I-65 when she tried to switch lanes and hit a construction barrel separating traffic from a construction area. She then continued into the construction zone and struck a worker with such force that the man was thrown onto a nearby work vehicle and landing some 100 feet away.
The 35-year-old construction worker died instantly from blunt force trauma at 10:30 a.m., reported by the Lake County coroner’s office. Witnesses say the workers was using a concrete saw on a caddy to cut a joint for a patch in the pavement. Indiana State Police say the construction along the Interstate has been ongoing for several months and is clearly marked off with signage, barrels, and cones. It has not been determined if the driver will be charged in the accident.
