A train accident occurred on around 9:00 at night on Saturday when two Long Island Rail Road trains hit each other on Saturday night. The accident occurred when a maintenance train, which had one car, and a commuter train, which had twelve cars, side swept each other because the maintenance train went onto the track area that belonged to the commuter train. The impact caused for pieces of the commuter train cars to come off and for some cars to be detached from the train. Thirty-three people were injured due to the accident. The Federal Railroad Administration is investigating the accident for a cause.
According to the Federal Railroad Administration, a total of about 2,059 train accidents took place in 2015 on both public and private crossings, which resulted in about 244 deaths and 967 injuries. In addition, when in the case of a train accident, a person is 20% more likely to die than in the case of an accident involving a different vehicle.
