An Iowa driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run accident last Spring has been sentenced to five years in prison. According to the court documents, the 21-year-old driver pleaded guilty at the September 23 hearing. The accused was charged with a class D felony and sentenced to five years in prison. In April 2016, the 21-year-old driver struck a 37-year-old woman who was crossing Southwest 9th Street. The driver fled the scene of the accident and failed to render aid. The woman died from her injuries. The driver claimed he did not know he had hit anyone, but the judge did not believe him. Authorities say the judge’s sentence of five years in prison sends a message to society for the need to value human life.
