A suspect who allegedly struck a firefighter on I-55 in December is now believed to have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. Police say the 42-year-old driver was charged with driving while intoxicated when he struck and injured the firefighter. According to authorities, the firefighter was struck as he was responding to a wreck on the highway. Police say as he was getting out of a fire truck on I-55 and Loughborough, he was hit by the drunk SUV driver. According to the official report, officers on the scene said they could smell alcohol on driver's breath, and he was arrested at the scene. Police say later he was released from jail on a $1,000 cash-only bond. Authorities say the firefighter was taken to a hospital in serious condition but is recovering. Police say the driver is facing multiple charges and jail time. The accident is still under investigation.
