A 27-year-old motorcyclist was killed on New Year’s Eve by a drunk wrong-way driver. According to the California Highway Patrol, a motorcyclist was hit by a suspected drunk driver traveling the wrong way on Interstate 5 on Saturday in San Ysidro. Officials say the drunk Mazda 3 driver was driving northbound in the southbound I-5 lanes north of Dairy Mart Road when he collided with a southbound motorcyclist. Authorities say the motorcyclist died at the scene of the crash.
CHP officials said a Dodge pickup truck also struck the Mazda 3, injuring the truck driver. The DUI suspect suffered only minor injuries and was treated at a nearby hospital. He was arrested on suspicion of DUI and taken to jail. Police have not released the name of the motorcycle victim nor the name of the DUI suspect. The accident is still under investigation. Authorities say the motorcyclist is one of 19 people killed this year in DUI-related crashes across the state on New Year’s holiday weekend.
