A fatal, two-vehicle auto-accident occurred on Monday, December 4th. After the driver of a Chrysler van, age 30, made a dangerous U-turn, the vehicle was hit by a Ford F-150. The van was occupied by two passengers, young boys ages six and nine. Tragically, the nine-year-old passed away after arriving at the hospital. His six-year-old brother and mom both sustained injuries. Both children were reported by authorities to not be wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident. Additionally, the van was lacking back seats. The driver of the Ford F-150 is not reported to have any injuries and is thought to not have been driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the collision.
The use of seatbelts is of dire importance; they decrease the chance of death or severe injury in an auto-accident by around 50%. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that nationally, there is a seat belt use rate of about 90% - but that still leaves around 27.5 million people who aren’t “buckling up”.
